Obispo, filósofo y activista social irlandés. Trabajó principalmente en el Trinity College, Dublín (hasta 1713) y como obispo de Cloyne (1734–52). Se lo conoce sobre todo por su afirmación de que, para los objetos materiales, ser es ser percibido ("Esse est percipi). Su vocación religiosa puede haberlo impulsado a hacer la salvedad de que, incluso si ningún ser humano percibe un objeto, Dios sí lo hace, con lo cual asegura la existencia continua del mundo físico cuando no es percibido por ningún ser finito. Fue uno de los fundadores del empirismo moderno, junto con John Locke y David Hume. A diferencia de Locke, no creía que existieran sustancias materiales fuera de la mente, sino más bien que los objetos existían sólo como colecciones de ideas sensibles. Entre sus obras se cuentan An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision [Ensayo hacia una nueva teoría de la visión] (1709), Tratado sobre los principios del conocimiento humano (1710) y Tres diálogos entre Hylas y Philonous (1713). Pasó parte de su carrera en América del Norte, donde propugnó la educación de los americanos nativos y los negros. La ciudad de Berkeley, California, EE.UU., lleva el nombre en su honor.
